During the first year of the project implementation, a group of 25 students was formed as their lead and mentor was Mrs. Diana Slavova - a head teacher in History. They organized and participated in various activities in conformity to the project objectives. Here we present the report of Mrs. Slavova, containing information about the project activity outcomes.
"The
aim of the project is to study and understand the content and the essence of
the Bulgarian National Revival period, to search for parallels between the
European processes that happened during the Renaissance and Enlightenment and
those running in the Bulgarian lands, to compare and understand the common
elements of these processes as part of the common European cultural and
historical development during the 18-19th century. The
project was presented at a school event, dedicated to the Day of the People's Leaders - November 1st. Then, on the
basis of certain criteria, developed by the project partners, a procedure was
opened for the selection of students wishing to participate in the project. We
have selected 25 student from our school - 10th and 11th grade. The beginning
of our activities started in November and followed a program developed by Diyana
Slavova and approved by the Project Head Mrs. Gergana Petrova.
The
activities, that have been carried out so far, are related to the application
of different methods of learning, analyzing, summarizing of historical
information. Various historical reference books have been used; different
historical sources have been interpreted; historical sites that date back to
this period have been visited; presentations have been prepared; drama
techniques have been applied.
Initially,
the characteristics of this historical period /18th-19th centuries/
in Europe as well as in the Bulgarian lands were introduced. The level to which
cultural and spiritual achievements have been preserved in the historical
memory and historiographical tradition of our people has been researched. Authors
and books written by writers, living at that time, as well as such that are our
contemporaries, evidence the preserved live memory and history.
The
changes, that took place during the Renaissance, were analyzed in detail: - economic changes
that were the beginning of new business activities; - social changes related
to the formation of the Bulgarian bourgeoisie; - spiritual changes that
are an important part of the Revival processes and a major emphasis of the project
activity implementation. The
practical tasks, carried out by the students, were related to working out and
showing presentations that concern the development of the Bulgarian society. The
students were divided into groups in order to explore, collect materials, and show
their presentations to the other participants. Here are the topics they have worked
on:
- development of the Bulgarian Revival School – church schools and types
of secular schools;-
development of the Renaissance architecture and construction - ecclesiastical
and secular;-
creation of educational literature and introduction to the works of the first
Bulgarian teachers and literary writers;- development
of secular literature – printing of periodicals and books;-
creation of public cultural clubs and libraries;
The
opportunities that the information technologies provide, knowledge of
literature and geography were used to prepare the presentations. This leads to
quick understanding and awareness of the historical processes and events in the
context of overall learning. Visits
to historical sites are another part of the project activities. A lot of sites
and monuments from the Revival period were visited in the town of Haskovo,
which practically illustrate what students have already learned. These are the Paskaleva’s
and Shishmanova’s Houses. The exposition, displayed at the Regional Historical
Museum, related to the Renaissance was seen, and in particular the development
of education in the city. Monuments of historical figures were visited - Nestor
Markov, Cap. Petko Voyvoda as well as the wars for our national
unification.
The
students, divided in groups, were included in the activity - design of a
project logo. Each group worked out and defended their ideas. A total number of
41 logo projects were presented by all partners and Tony and Petya’s logo was
voted to be the best one and it was accepted as the official logo of the project.
We also
created a project corner in the school lobby on the second floor. We studied
the most typical symbols for each partner country and displayed it on the project
board. Thus the students expanded their knowledge about other countries as
well. The preservation and recreation of national traditions is also part
of the project activities. On this occasion, drama techniques proved to be a
good method of studying the cultural heritage. For Christmas, we presented a
show, entitled "Traditions Come Alive". We restored Christmas rituals
and welcoming of the birth of Christ in the Bulgarian Revival House. The pupils
were dressed in Bulgarian national costumes, sang folk songs, danced Bulgarian dances
and received the applauses of all the teachers and pupils."
